Local soldier loses leg in ambush

U.S. Army Pvt. 2nd Class Tristan Wyatt joined the military two weeks before Sept. 11, 2001.

Two years after the worst day in American history, the 2001 Ponderosa High School graduate lies in a bed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., after being hit with a rocket-propelled grenade fired by anti-American forces in Iraq.

The Aug. 25 ambush claimed much of Wyatt's right leg and occurred while his six-man, light-armored-vehicle squad was policing a region of the Euphrates River valley west of Baghdad, said his father, Todd Wyatt, and stepmother, Jeana Ramirez, of Franktown.
