WASHINGTON -- Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Gubler was on foot patrol in Ramadi, Iraq, when he noticed the rusty truck hood on top of a mound of dirt beside the road. Seconds later, the mound exploded, and the 37-year-old National Guardsman fell to the ground, blinded and with his left arm severed. Now, less than two months later, instead of languishing he's preparing for a hunting trip in February.

The families and loved ones of the three Canadian soldiers wounded in Afghanistan are drawing support from each other and from the encouragement they have received from people back home.

Pte. William Salikin and Master Cpl. Paul Franklin are making encouraging progress, while Cpl. Jeffrey Bailey remains in a medically induced coma.

Military amputees spend a special week in Sun Valley

SUN VALLEY -- Eight military amputees won't soon forget their winter vacation in Idaho.

Sgt. Dan Regin was among eight military amputees who hit the slopes of Sun Valley this week.

Several Sun Valley charities made it possible for them to spend the week there to learn how to ski.

It's a small thank you to these men for their sacrifice.

“What we hit was an anti-tank mine,” said Sgt. Dan Gilyeat, U.S.M.C.

Sgt. Gilyeat lost his leg in Iraq, but he did not lose his spirit.

“We've just been going higher and it's getting easier, now I’m just hauling down the side of the mountain,” said Sgt. Gilyeat.

[Picture: Harland Quarrington]The world-class care provided to injured service personnel was praised by Secretary of State for Defence John Reid during a visit to the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) at Headley Court today, 20 January 2005.

John Reid said:

"We ask a great deal of our Armed Forces and their medical care is understandably given a very high priority. We provide world-class care for our world-class Armed Forces. In all the visits I have made to see injured service personnel I have been genuinely impressed with the care they receive and the hard work and professionalism of the Defence Medical Staff. Their dedication and commitment is unparalleled. The facilities I have seen today demonstrate the commitment and financial investment that the MoD has made to provide cutting edge medical care

Bush in Combat with a Tree

Okay, try really hard to just report articles and leave the 'politics' out of this blog, however this is just inexcusable.

While visiting with **amputees** at the Brooke Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. This happened:

"The president had a two-inch scratch across the left side of his brow.

"As you can probably see I was injured myself, not here at the hospital but in combat with a cedar," Bush quipped. "I eventually won.""

Oh, Mr. President, you are so funny.
